Built at the bottom of a vast gulf on the Caribbean Sea, encircled in north by timbered mountains, JACMEL was founded in 1698 by the Company of Santo Domingo. Its name would come from a flibustier, Jacques MELLO, thesis which its old French orthography seems to accredit, JACQUEMEL. Today softened a little, it has considerable tourist assets. In addition to its architecture and its environment of beaches and mountains, JACMEL offers an original and abundant craft industry.

History: After 1804, the city takes part in the fight of emancipation of the Latin America. On March 12, 1806, the precursor of independence vnzulienne, Francisco de Miranda, creates in this bay the flag of its country by overcoming yellow of Spain the horizontal bands blue and red of the flag Haitian. In 1816, JACMEL accomodates the libertador vnzulie, Simon Bolivar, who will set out again about it charged with weapons and ammunition and accompanied by many Haitian volunteers.

The literary and artistic city:
D' Alcibiade Pommayrac in Felix Morisseau-Leroy, pioneer of the creole literature, the economic advancement of Jacmel was accompanied by a pleiad by poets and intellectuals. Two great figures, which drew their inspiration in the town of their childhood, were distinguished with the international level.
