Fauna and Flora of Haiti

The Haitian ecosystem has a great diversity supported by the relative insulation of the island. One distinguishes nine zones on the basis of the desert and going to the wet forest, which maintain the existence of a great diversity of plants since the mangroves to the forests of pines. More than 5000 varieties of plants (two thirds in the forests including 300 species of orchises) and 220 families of birds would still exist in the country.
The development program of the United Nations estimates that 35% of these plants are specific to Haiti. The park of the Visit shelters in particular an endemic species of pine. The Macaya park contains pines of which some reach 45 m in height and approximately 2 m in diameter. A plant on 10 met through the park is specific to the country. The arid zone also comprises many species of endemic cacti. Many fruit trees producing of mangos, of coconuts, lawyer and other are planted in the principal inhabited areas.

However, the fast disappearance of the forest cover involved the extinction of certain animal plant species and, sometimes single in the world, and threatens the unit of the ecosystem.

The only dangerous species or very vermin present in Haiti are the mygale (spider being able to reach 18 cm broad), the scolopendre (millipede reaching 30 cm length), the bat (vector of the rage) and the mosquitos (vector of paludism and the dengue.)
