| Flibustiers, twelve Brothers of the Coast coming from the Tortoise, were installed in 1670 on a site where had undoubtedly already lived of the Spaniards. The latter recognized officially the seizure of France on the Western part of Santo Domingo by the treaty of Ryswick in 1697, date on which one procdau with the first gridiron plan layout of the city which privileged bay, called then Petite Handle, with the detriment of the old site of the Low-Cape, entirely destroyed by the flames three years before. The Cape-French, it is then his name, affirmed himself quickly like the most prosperous city and most important of the colony, in spite of the many fires and seisms which struck it. This city and its area were used as framework with major events of hardly of independence: The ceremony of Wood-Caiman, arrival of Santhonax, unloading of Leclerc forwarding, battles decisive of Vertires. Today, the Cape, which counts a hundred and ten thousand inhabitants, is the second city of the country and one of most dynamic, with its very active port and its aerodrome which ensures of the direct and regular connections with the United States.
