The island of the Tortoise is located at broad Port-with-Peace and it is separated from the northern peninsula of Haiti by a 16 km broad channel which narrows in the middle of the sea level, in dull Monde, near the Cabbage trees, the capital of the island. The most beautiful sight of the ground of Haiti, and in particular of the zone which goes from the Cape-Haitian to Jean Rabel, can be observed since the catholic mission. Around extends a vegetation from citrus fruits, coconuts and avocado trees.
The population is of 36000 inhabitants dispersed through the island. Two of the most important cities of the island, Cayonne and Lowland, are on the northern coast and are distant only of 1 km. |
